Vox Viridis Non-Profit of the Week: Gulf Restoration Network

    In Their Own Words:

The Gulf Restoration Network (GRN) is a network of environmental, social justice, and citizens' groups and individuals committed to restoring the Gulf of Mexico to an ecologically and biologically sustainable condition.

    What They Do:

The Gulf Restoration Network work is centered on protecting and restoring the natural resources of the Gulf of Mexico:

    • Fisheries - Ensuring the sustainable management of the fisheries of the Gulf of Mexico

    • Gulf Energy - Protecting the natural resources of the Gulf Region from the myriad effects and impacts of the oil & gas industry.

    • Healthy Waters - Protecting and restoring waters throughout the Gulf of Mexico that are critical to recreation, fisheries, wildlife habitat, and drinking water.

    • Mercury -  Safeguarding the Gulf region from the impacts of Mercury contamination.

    • Natural Defense - Protecting and restoring the coastal wetlands and barrier islands that form natural barriers to flooding, and storm surge.

    • Save Our Cypress - A campaign to save our cypress forests from being clear-cut for cypress mulch.

    • Species At Risk - Safeguarding the habitat of threatened and endangered species throughout the Gulf region.

    • Wetlands - Protecting wetlands from reckless development, destructive logging practices and harmful policies by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    What You Can Do:

Download the September 2009 Gulf States Report Card.  This report grades each of the five Gulf states on how different important sections of the Clean Water Act are incorporated into state rules.  Each state scored poorly, averaging a D+.  The scores ranged from a C- to an F.

Visit their blog, make a donation, or ask Congress to demand from the Corps a plan for coastal Louisiana.
